KUALA LUMPUR – The RM5 Menu Rahmah programme will eventually be available at non-halal eateries, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said.

He told the New Straits Times that the move to cater to non-Muslims will be discussed between the ministry and those in the food and beverage industry.

Things to take into consideration include which pork cuts would be practical to use in RM5 meals, as there are premium cuts as well.

Currently, the RM5 Menu Rahmah meals launched on January 31 are available at 15,000 participating eateries nationwide. These eateries comprise some 12,000 mamak restaurants, 800 Indian restaurants, 500 Kuala Lumpur-based tom yam shops, and all Mydin outlets.

There are plans to expand the programme to Sabah and Sarawak, and also to university campuses.

In the interview with NST, Salahuddin also said the broader Rahmah initiative will cover other areas such as providing food baskets, consumer goods packages and sale discounts to help people cope with the rising cost of living.

They will be called the Rahmah Package, Rahmah Cafe, Rahmah Sale and Rahmah Basket.

He also said government statistics showed that there are some 127,000 Malaysian households in the hardcore poor category. – The Vibes, February 4, 2023
