MIRI – Penan people in Long Tanyit, a remote settlement in central Sarawak, are in need of food aid after flash floods destroyed their farms.
Hulu Rajang PKR branch chief Abun Sui Anyit said the Long Tanyit chief, MaYau Imang, had sought his office’s help after floods on February 13 struck the Belaga district in his constituency.
The affected Penan have lost all the crops they planted, and their homes were damaged as well, he added.
“The Penan headman MaYau had appealed for food aid,” said Abun Sui, who is also Sarawak PKR deputy chairman.
He also called on the state authorities to immediately respond with material and food supplies to the flood victims, noting that state agencies can move faster with helicopters and speed boats.
Long Tanyit is located about eight hours away from Bintulu town. – The Vibes, February 17, 2023
