KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the slashing of MP’s development allocations will not affect projects involving the people’s welfare.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said he is aware of certain quarters expressing their discontent with the move and is ready to hear critics’ opinions on the reduced allocation.

“I would like to touch on MPs’ allocations since there are some parties trying to question why it is necessary to reduce it,” he said while tabling the revised Budget 2023.

“Projects for citizens will not be reduced, including those in less developed states. I am ready to listen to thoughts on the matter and hold discussions later.”

Earlier, Anwar, who is also finance minister, announced that grants to state governments based on economic development, infrastructure, and citizens’ well-being will be increased by RM70 million to RM400 million.

“This grant will be especially helpful to states that are underdeveloped, including Kedah and Perlis,” he said.

Earlier this month, Anwar announced that MPs’ development allowances will be cut back by 65% from RM3.8 million to RM1.3 million, triggering concern from MPs on the welfare of their constituencies.

However, Anwar said that the government would consider extending additional allocations if there were pressing needs in a particular parliamentary constituency, such as for repairing infrastructure. – The Vibes, February 24, 2023
