JOHOR BARU – With continuous rain since yesterday evening, several districts in Johor are currently experiencing floods and victims are taking to social media to seek help for themselves and their loved ones.

So far, floods have been reported in four districts – Kluang, Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, and Segamat.

The state Disaster Management Committee also announced that 1,591 victims in all four districts sought shelter in 21 relief centres as of 8am today.

Meanwhile, Twitter user @mohdirw2684171 posted that floods have hit Kg Batu 23 in Pagoh, and is seeking assistance for senior citizens in the area.

“Please help inform security personnel in Kg Batu 23, 84600, Pagoh, Muar, Johor.

“A large number of senior citizens haven’t been evacuated, hoping for security personnel who can help.”

Facebook user Azerien Jamall, sought help from NGOs for his children and in-laws in Chaah, Segamat.

Although they sought shelter at a relief centre, his family is now seeing floodwaters in the area rise, cutting off supply routes.

“Please pray for the safety of my in-laws and children. My children were visiting their grandmother when the floods hit. It has been two decades since it flooded there. Fortunately, they have sought shelter at the relief centre since 2am.

“But the rains are still heavy. Floodwaters at the relief centre are rising and have cut off supply routes. I seek the help of any available NGOs.”

Hapizah Wahid, another Facebook user, shared that her mother’s home in Chaah has been hit by floods, with half of her home already inundated.

Her mother, who is ill, has been moved upstairs, and Hapizah is unable to get to her as she has received information that most roads are flooded.

“It’s been a while since my mother’s place was flooded. Now half the house is underwater. My mom who is sick has moved upstairs and I can’t go back because the roads are flooded too.

“I hope the rain subsides so I can go get my mother.”

Netizen Azizah Bani, who appears to be in an urgent situation, sought emergency assistance from the roof of her home in Kg Jawa, Chaah.

“Urgent help needed. Floods. My family is on our rooftop at No 46, Jalan Sidek, Kg Jawa, Chaah.”

Currently, agencies have mobilised assistance to various areas in Johor.

Segamat district police chief Ahmad Zamry Marinsah visited Labis to supervise the flood situation there along with a “Botman Team” providing assistance to victims.

Members of the public in Segamat district who need assistance can call 07-9324222.

The army’s 7th Brigade has been on the scene at Kluang since 9.30pm yesterday to assist in evacuating flood victims to nearby relief centres. – The Vibes, March 1, 2023
