JOHOR BARU – Seventy-five people who sought refuge from floods in a multipurpose hall in Johor are in dire need of assistance as water levels continue to rise at the relief centre.
Rescue personnel are also unable to reach the hall in Chaah, Segamat, as the floods have left them stranded.
The Vibes received information from one Priyasalini Selvan, who said three infants, 62 adults and 10 citizens are currently in the hall. A photo sent by Priyasalini also shows rising water levels in the facility.
Also in Chaah, 30 people in Taman Soon Chong are in need of help.
When contacted, Segamat district police said it already has personnel up and running on the ground to provide assistance.
However, police noted that only two boats are available for rescue operations.
Other reports state that the Labis Fire and Rescue Department personnel are cut off from Chaah, forcing their counterparts in Yong Peng to take over operations.
However, a spokesman from the Yong Peng Fire and Rescue Department told The Vibes that their staff, which also has only two boats, have been cut off from Chaah town.
Earlier, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) closed 20 substations, affecting 800 accounts in Kota Tinggi due to flooding, according to TNB Johor’s managing director.
However, as of 2.51pm, TNB said on its Facebook page that electricity supply in Kota Tinggi has resumed.
So far, floods have been reported in four districts: Kluang, Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, and Segamat.
Earlier in the day, people in the affected areas and those with family members there took to social media to appeal for help after floods after continuous rain since yesterday had left them stranded before they could get to a temporary shelter.
The state Disaster Management Committee also announced that 5,878 victims in all four districts sought shelter in 21 relief centres compared to 1,591 evacuees recorded this morning. – The Vibes, March 1, 2023
