GEORGE TOWN – Johor Darul Ta’zim star striker Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad was inconsolable at Seberang Jaya Hospital after the crash this morning that took the lives of his 22-day-old baby boy and his mother-in-law, Zainab Wahab.
Syafiq’s father Ahmad Ibrahim, 56, did not have a chance to see his grandson, reported the New Straits Times today.
Ahmad was quoted as saying that he was going to head to Johor to see his newborn grandson after the conditional movement control order was lifted.
NST reported that the trip was put on hold since last month when Ahmad’s residence in Bayan Baru was placed under the enhanced movement control order.
“Our family was excited to visit our first grandson, Muhammad Aisy Saqeef, and Syafiq’s siblings had applied for leave to visit him in Johor. We are devastated over the accident and the fact that we could not see the baby,” he was quoted as saying when met at the Sg Bakap Hospital’s forensic unit.
Syafiq was on his way to his in-laws’ house in Pendang, Kedah.
Also killed in the accident was Titik Sukamti, an Indonesian believed to be the family’s maid.
Syafiq’s two-year-old daughter, Aaira Nur Saffiyya, suffered minor injuries while his wife, Nur Amalina Nur Ain, 25, is said to be in stable condition.
It was previously reported that Nur Amalina suffered serious injuries.
The three have been admitted to Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Authorities believe that the family’s Toyota Vellfire rammed into the railing at the Sg Bakap exit lane in the North-South Highway.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extricate the victims from the mangled vehicle, said a Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.
Syafiq plays for the topflight JDT club, and was born and raised in Bayan Lepas, Penang. – The Vibes, December 6, 2020
