KUALA LUMPUR – Jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is studying for a postgraduate degree behind bars, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.

In an interview with Sin Chew Daily’s Pocketimes, the minister also said Najib did not have access to any gadgets to help him in his studies.

“No, straight up, no. He has his Facebook admins, but no gadgets (in prison),” Saifuddin said in a video report by the Chinese news media.

He added that Kajang Prison, where Najib is serving time, has had many inmates who completed their Master’s and PhD studies.

Najib, the former Pekan MP, is serving a 12-year jail term for corruption involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. He also has to pay a RM210 million fine.

He began his sentence on August 24 last year after failing to have his conviction and sentence overturned by the Federal Court. He is currently seeking a review of the apex court’s decision.

Najib is also facing a slew of other charges involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), which he oversaw as finance minister. Last week on March 3, however, he was acquitted of abuse of power charges related to the alleged tampering of a 1MDB audit report. – The Vibes, March 8, 2023
