MIRI – Local carrier Firefly Airlines will be taking over Malaysia Airlines’ flights between Sarawak and Sabah starting May 16.

In a statement, Firefly said it will operate daily return flights for the Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu-Tawau, and Kota Kinabalu-Kuching routes, as well as daily return flights between Kuching and Miri.

“Due to continued increase in demand for all these routes, the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has carried out this latest initiative.

“It represents a significant milestone in strategic route rationalisation in MAG.

“It will offer customers superior value, enhanced flexibility, and services via Firefly,” MAG chief executive officer Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi said.

He said the latest move is a testimony of MAG’s continuous efforts to refine and improve its networking and products offered to customers.

Azmi also said Firefly will operate the above sectors using new retrofitted Boeing 737-800 aircraft that have 189 economy-class seats.
