KUALA LUMPUR – PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said his recent meeting with long-time rival and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was intended to enhance Malay political dominance in the country.

Taking to Facebook in his Minda Presiden column, Hadi said although Dr Mahathir has been a staunch critic of PAS, the veteran leader shared several similarities with those in the party.

“Despite him (Dr Mahathir) having wronged PAS repeatedly in the past, many similarities must be considered, including working together for the sake of Islam, race, and nation.

“Among the discussions involved included the need for Malay-Muslim unity (as the community) makes up the majority of this multicultural country,’’ said Hadi today.

Hadi lamented that the Muslims, despite being the majority, were divided along political lines, while non-Malays have consolidated their support for Pakatan Harapan, particularly DAP.

“That is why the Malay political dominance has eroded because it is now held by the non-Malays after the (recent) election.

“Thus, the Malays have been damned to live in shame and have sinned as they allow the strength of political Islam to be eroded,” the Marang MP said.

Dismissing the government’s supposed plural views on nation-building, Hadi also claimed that many Malays in the government have been “duped” into becoming a placeholder by vested parties who seek to control the government.

Hadi also claimed that Umno was no longer able to represent the Malays, as they have been plagued by “money politics” and “corruption”.

Hadi’s column came after several Perikatan Nasional leaders met with Dr Mahathir to sign the “Malay Proclamation”, a document intended to “unite” and “save” the Malay community. – The Vibes, May 4, 2023
