KUALA LUMPUR – PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang appears to have taken a thinly veiled swipe at the unity government in his latest tirade defending former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Noting that PAS fully supports Dr Mahathir’s efforts to unite the Malay community, Hadi derided the nonagenarian’s opponents by claiming that they have been “immersed in pursuit” of their ideals to the point where personal attacks against Malay figures are “legitimised”.
Hadi, who is also Marang MP, went on to say that those who do not agree with Dr Mahathir’s efforts are guilty of “conspiring with large groups of non-Malays and non-Muslims, many of whom are robbers and have offered or received bribes.”
“In fact, together with him are those with extreme politics against Malays and Muslims… whose brains are placed in their stomachs and they jump around like monkeys, clinging to trees with poisonous and intoxicating fruits,” Hadi said in a lengthy Facebook post today.
The post comes less than a week after top PAS leaders signed Dr Mahathir’s Malay Proclamation, which is a document ostensibly intended to “unite” and “save” the Malay community.
While Hadi did not name the target of his criticism, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier today took aim at Malaysian tycoons, daring them to give back some of their wealth to “save the Malay community.”
At the government’s Madani Aidilfitri open house in Penang two days ago, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, had made similar remarks against wealthy Malays with “Tun” and “Tan Sri” titles whom he said would talk about saving the Malays, but in reality, enriched themselves and their family members.
Previously, the Tambun MP had in the past alleged that numerous Malay political leaders accumulated massive wealth during their time in politics.
During one of his speeches in March, Anwar had made reference to a Malay leader who had been in power for 22 years, leading to Dr Mahathir filing a RM150 million defamation suit against him. – The Vibes, May 8, 2023
