KUALA LUMPUR – Former Bersatu information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasek Gelugor-PN) has raised the possibility that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had ulterior motives behind its investigations, following alleged information leaks from anonymous sources in the agency.
Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat today, the opposition lawmaker asked about the measures taken by the government to improve the MACC’s shortcomings in curbing information leakages, which have been making rounds in the news.
He said this was to provide reassurance to the people that the agency’s investigations were done transparently without ulterior motives.
“Lately, numerous information leaked by anonymous MACC sources have been published in the news on the agency’s investigations,” he said during the parliamentary question-and-answer session.
“This raises the question of whether the MACC deliberately made the leaks under certain reasons,” he added.
In response, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh (Bukit Gelugor-PH) remarked that the option of filing police reports was available.
“Of course, the MACC is prohibited from disclosing (its) investigations,”
“Should there be information leaks, they can be overcome by making police reports and the matter will be further investigated,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ramkarpal said that the government is examining the proposal to put the MACC under the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) Act 2009 (Act 700).
This includes the establishment of a pro tem committee to study the need to include the MACC as one of the enforcement agencies under EAIC's supervision, which was agreed to by the cabinet on April 19, 2023. – The Vibes, June 14, 2023
