BALIK PULAU – Caretaker Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz was left stunned after discovering that a constituent who was assaulted today was none other than his own wife.

While out on his routine rounds, the Amanah assemblyman received a call from his wife, Norhailee Rasid, at around 2pm.

Earlier at 1.30pm, a man had entered the family’s grocery outlet here to reprimand Norhailee for telling off his daughter for allegedly stealing at the premises.

The assailant was captured on an internal CCTV. In the footage, he could be seen behaving in an agitated manner, scolding Azrul’s wife before appearing to strike her.

He then tried to punch the victim but failed as she managed to get behind the counter.

There were eyewitnesses inside during the alleged attack: a patron and a shop assistant.

Azrul notified the media about the incident and later brought his wife to lodge a police report before rushing her to seek medical assistance.

“I am concerned if there are internal injuries due to the assault.”

The incident likely occurred because the suspect was unhappy that his daughter was reprimanded by Azrul’s wife for allegedly shoplifting items, believed to be snacks.

According to Azrul, his wife had only advised the girl to not repeat such actions in the future after she was caught red-handed, and did not even demand payment for the allegedly stolen items.

The girl fled the shop before she apparently recounted the incident to her father, who then stormed into the shop to hurt Norhailee.

Southwest district police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal had reportedly confirmed the case, and that a police report was lodged.

Police are now actively trying to locate the suspect. – The Vibes, July 6, 2023
