IPOH – A 6-month-old baby girl died after two days in a coma, after she is believed to have been abused by her babysitter.

Ipoh police chief Yahaya Hassan said police received a report from Ipoh Hospital on Wednesday informing them that the baby had been admitted.

The hospital revealed that the baby was in a coma with swelling on her body, believed to have been caused by abuse.

Following that, he said a police team detained a 52-year-old local woman who is the baby’s full-time babysitter on Thursday.

The suspect has been remanded four days till July 17 for investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglecting, abandoning, or exposing the child in a manner likely to cause them physical or emotional injury.

However, he said the case has since been classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code after the baby died in paediatric intensive care at 2.51pm yesterday.

Yahaya said a post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was blunt trauma to the head.

The suspect had been for the baby since March as both parents are working in Australia. – The Vibes, July 15, 2023
