KEPALA BATAS – Workers with vocational skills should consider themselves top workers in the job market as their skills are now in higher demand due to the industrialisation push.

Those with technical and vocational educational training (TVET) skills should now consider it a main occupation rather than something secondary or a job to fall back on, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi here.

The rural development minister said that he is confident enough to tell the cabinet that TVET graduates should now be earning up to RM2,000 monthly at the entry level.

He said this at the launching of the TVET exposition by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Bertam Square here.

The event was led by the Rural Development Ministry as an outreach to youth up north.

“It is time that we recognise TVET as a first-skill option to pursue jobs, especially for SPM graduates and other school leavers,” said Zahid.

He said that out of the 280,000 TVET graduates last year, 92.5% obtained employment.

There are now also 250 institutes nationwide providing TVET education.

The government is now streamlining TVET to ensure that its graduates can be competitive for the global marketplace, he said.

This is especially as the world pivots towards Industrial 4.0 with new technology to explore such as electrical vehicles, food and space exploration.

Zahid also called on employers and institutions of higher learning to provide higher incentives to encourage their workers and the students to take up TVET skills. – The Vibes, July 16, 2023
