GEORGE TOWN – A leading landmark in Penang’s tourism landscape, Penang Hill has sealed itself among the state’s top holiday attractions in the past few years.
Yesterday, the hill’s iconic status was further solidified when it became the first tourist destination in Penang to be featured in a complete set of commemorative stamps.
The postage series, launched by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, will be available at selected post offices throughout Malaysia starting today at RM64.20 for each set.
The series includes a first-generation stamp sheet, second and third-generation stamp sheets; first day cover with stamp; first day cover with miniature sheet; a miniature sheet; postcard and a folder.
The special issue is a joint collaboration between the Penang Hill Corporation, led by general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng, with national mail service provider Pos Malaysia Bhd.
Cheok said the memorabilia is a historical record for future generations.
Meanwhile, Chow said that the Penang Hill funicular is a symbol of progress and unity.
“Today, we stand at the threshold of its 100th year, reflecting on the memories, transformation, and unity it has brought to our community,” said Chow.
The train ride had its inaugural journey on October 21 in 1923.
The chief minister added that the stamps also emphasise the importance of preserving and conserving the hill’s distinctive biodiversity as well as its historical heritage.
This is for the benefit of future generations, he explained.
“With that in mind, it is important for us to commemorate this (legacy) through this commemorative set, where the three generations of the funicular have been immortalised,” he said.
