PETALING JAYA – The old Malay adage “sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit” is especially appropriate for this amazing saving feat.

The phrase means if you start with a small amount, soon it will grow.

For seven years, Muhammad Hafiz Abdul Hamid saved up his 50 sen coins in a large 19-litre water bottle.

He finally decided to cash in recently and shared a video on TikTok where he said it took four people over three hours to count the coins he collected.

@bifoty_camper Total RM5360.00 hasil simpan semua duit 50sen..takde duit [email protected] masa 3jam baru siap kira dengan tenaga 4org tukang kira? alhamdulillah.. #menabung #duitsyiling #50sen #alhamdulillah ♬ original sound - Bifoty camper?

As can be imagined, the water bottle was a heavy load as it was filled to the brim with 50 sen coins.

In order to unload the coins, they had to saw the bottle in half.

The grand total? RM5,360.

Speaking to mStar, Hafiz shared that he started small, keeping the coins in a mug and later in a potato chips container. When his collection grew, he upgraded to the 19-litre water dispenser bottle.

The Penang man said he initially had no plans for the money but because he had once eyed an iPhone, he decided to purchase an iPhone 14 cash with the money he saved.

This was after he had to visit six banks in order to change the coins to notes.

When someone asked him in the comment section about banks no longer accepting coin exchange, Hafiz said this wasn't true as he managed to do it.

Many congratulated him for his perseverance, while some made jokes.

“No wonder I feel my coins had depleted,” said @sabah_di_kk. – The Vibes, September 21, 2023
