MIRI – An 11-year-old schoolboy died on a football field at his school in Bintulu district in northern Sarawak after he suffered fatal head injuries during extracurricular activities with his classmates.
The Standard 5 pupil died during the tragic incident at his school, SK St Anthony, yesterday morning.
Bintulu district police chief Batholomew Umpit today confirmed that police carried out an investigation into the incident after receiving a report from the school management.
“Our investigations showed there was no element of foul play. The pupil died after he sustained serious injuries to the head,” he said in a statement.
“The injuries were caused by a goalpost that broke and fell onto his head while he and his classmates were playing at the site during their extracurricular activities.”
The pupil was rushed to the Bintulu hospital by the school authorities.
However, upon arrival at the hospital, a medical officer, upon checking, found him to be already dead.
Police have classified the case as one of sudden death, Umpit said.
He warned the public not to spread false information and speculate further about the incident.
