PETALING JAYA – Sarawak is in the process of calculating the costs involved in taking over MASWings, said Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
The premier said they had no choice but to set up their own small airline to meet the needs of Sarawakians.
“Currently, we are calculating the cost of taking over MASWings.
“The federal government has agreed to the takeover as long as we fly outside Borneo also,” he said as reported by The Borneo Post.
He was replying to a participant during a public dialogue held in conjunction with Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
The participants had voiced concern over the exorbitant airfares during festive seasons which caused great distress to many Sarawakians living in the peninsula.
“God-willing, in the near future, we will get a solution for us to take over MASwings from Malaysia Aviation Group and it will be placed under Sarawak.
“This is one of the ways for us to help,” added Abang Johari.
Earlier this year, Sarawak had agreed to take over MASwings Sdn Bhd as proposed by the federal government instead of proceeding with its own boutique airline.
Abang Johari said a decision will be made later on whether to retain the name MASwings or change it if Sarawak confirms it will take over the company.
He added that the airline will switch to sustainable aviation fuel that Sarawak produces if it does take over MASwings. – The Vibes, October 21, 2023
