KUALA LUMPUR – The opposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition is gathering evidence regarding alleged intimidation directed at its MPs to support the ruling unity government.
PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said they need to undertake this first before any further action can be taken, including making a police report.
"We are gathering information as we took pictures of those who met us (the MPs). We want to see where these people were from.
“… but the important thing is to stop doing all these things," he said at a press conference at the PN headquarters here today.
On October 12, PN’s Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid had announced his resolve to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership.
Anwar is chairman of Pakatan Harapan and president of PKR.
Iskandar had said that he would not leave or betray his party Bersatu under any circumstances on the principle of obedience and loyalty to the party.
This was followed by PN’s Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman expressing support for the leadership of Anwar and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on October 30.
Suhaili, who is Labuan MP, said that he came to the decision upon taking into account all the problems faced by the people of Labuan, who are faced with rising cost of living, as well as continuous interruption of water and power supply.
He also pledged his continued allegiance to Anwar.
Previously, Hamzah had reportedly claimed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had threatened Iskandar to support the government or face corruption charges.
However, Anwar refuted this allegation, stressing that he had never met the two PN MPs.
He asked the opposition to show evidence if the allegations were true.
Earlier at the press conference today, two other MPs – Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu) and Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (Besut) – claimed that they were also approached by certain quarters enticing them to defect to the ruling government.
Ku Abd Rahman said he was contacted by someone via WhatsApp who claimed to want to open a hotel in his constituency.
Che Mohamad said someone who identified himself as Datuk Rizal Adham had emailed him with intentions of developing a hotel in Besut.
Both MPs said they rebuffed the parties that contacted them either by blocking or ignoring them. – The Vibes, November 3, 2023
