Hi, everyone! As a continuation to last week’s article, which presented exotic dance as a viable workout alternative, I would now like to introduce the fundamentals of exotic dance.
As an exotic dance instructor for the past 8 years, I can assure you that anyone can perform these moves and poses after a few short attempts, provided they have the right training and learn the appropriate technique.
The first step would be to take yourself out of your comfort zone and join me in the world of exotic fitness!
Without further ado, here are the fundamental moves in exotic dance:
Basic spin
There are various beginner spins around the pole, which you can pick up easily after a few classes.
In the knee spin, the inner parts of both knees are used to clamp the pole while your shoulders are pressed down, your right arm held up high and your left arm placed across the chest.
The key to this move is to lean forward into the spin, rather than to hoist yourself upwards.
Trucker chick
As the name goes, this pose reflects a sexy girl’s silhouette as she leans back on her hands and arches her chest.
In my experience, students, who are lying down on the floor, are able to successfully move into this position after a brief practice period.
The key is to lift the legs and swing them down, creating a see-saw effect from the corresponding momentum, which brings the torso upwards as you simultaneously engage the core muscles to drag the hands inwards while opening up the chest and arching the neck backwards.
This is a key move in exotic dance as it is one of the techniques used in floorwork.
Body slide
Although it resembles a push-up ─ albeit a sexier version ─ some practice is required to fluidly execute this simple move, which has your knees on the floor while your face and arched chest form an arc towards the floor.
The key is to use your arms to sustain your body weight while you push against the floor and engage the abdominals so that your face isn’t planted to the ground!
Reverse the move or push back to complete one body slide. Keep repeating until it becomes effortless!
Even in the simplest dance move, you’ll notice an emphasis on upper body strength and core engagement.
While it’s not a prerequisite, your body can be conditioned and strengthened over time through repetition ─ that is why exotic dance can be a fantastic tool for fitness! ─ The Vibes, 10 February, 2021
