KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu praised the national contingent for their satisfying performance at the recently-concluded Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In a statement, he expressed his appreciation to everyone involved in the Games, and to the hard work put in by the athletes and officials involved.
“Thank you to all parties involved in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games including the National Sports Council, Olympic Council of Malaysia, National Sports Institute, and other officials who contributed to the success.
“Also, congratulations to chef-de-mission Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya and deputy chef-de-mission Gerard Monteiro Clair for successfully ensuring that all plans and affairs of the athletes went smoothly during their stay in Birmingham,” read the statement.
Faizal also acknowledged the ever-important support and prayers from Malaysians, which motivated the athletes’ to give their all for their beloved country.
He also noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri’s consistent support and encouragement will continue to uplift the athletes’ and officials’ spirits and chart more success in the future.
Despite the win, the ministry identified several sports whose results have been disappointing.
The ministry, said Faizal, will look into the matter seriously and is taking thorough action to achieve better results in the future.
During the Commonwealth Games, held on July 28-August 8, Malaysia successfully clinched seven gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals, which surpassed the initial target set by the ministry.
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games medal tally:
Gold – badminton women’s doubles, badminton mixed team event, para powerlifting men’s lightweight, weightlifting men’s 61kg and 55kg, and rhythmic gymnastics ribbon and ball category.
Silver – diving women’s 3m springboard, diving women’s synchronised 3m springboard, diving men’s synchronised 3m springboard, badminton men’s singles, lawn bowls women’s triples, table tennis mixed doubles, table tennis women’s team, and weightlifting men’s 73kg.
Bronze – diving mixed synchronised 3m springboard, badminton men’s doubles, badminton mixed doubles, cycling men’s keirin, judo men’s 73kg, lawn bowls women’s singles, rhythmic gymnastics clubs, and squash women’s doubles. – The Vibes, August 9, 2022
