KUALA LUMPUR – Sri Pahang FC player Sergio Aguero is now a naturalised Malaysian citizen.

The 28-year-old said he feels honoured to become part of this country when he confirmed the news on his Instagram account on Malaysia Day.

“I proudly announce, today I’m a Malaysian. I’m only here because of the empathy and support of people around me. Without them, I will not be where I am.”

Born in La Rioja, Argentina, Aguero also thanked Sri Pahang owner Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah for his assistance in the naturalisation process, along with the club’s management team.

Aguero said Kuantan has become a special place for him and his family, and he intends to stay for some time.

“I’m in love with the food, the tranquillity, the people who are so nice and the utmost important part is that I find my peace here with my family.

“There are no more words to describe how happy I am and looking forward to wearing the gold and blue jersey in the Malaysia Cup.”

Aguero started playing in Malaysia when he joined Melaka United FC in 2017. He would then go on to play for Sarawak United in 2018 and head north to join Penang FC the following year.

Recently, another Sri Pahang player, Lee Tuck, announced his Malaysian citizenship after the Malaysian Football League approved the club’s registration of both Lee and Sergio as naturalised players.

Other footballers who received their Malaysian citizenship are Mohamadou Sumareh, Liridon Krasniqi, and Guilherme De Paula. – The Vibes, September 17, 2022
