KUALA LUMPUR – National swimmer Bryan Leong has set a new national record in the men’s 100m butterfly at the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) today.
Bryan, who represented Kuala Lumpur, registered the fastest time of 53.32s.
It was 0.01s ahead of the initial national record set by Daniel Bego at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, which was 53.33s.
“I could not believe that I just broke the record that was held by Daniel since 2009. He was one of my biggest idols in Malaysia.
“I did not go into this race expecting to go at 53s. This is my new personal best too,” he said when met after the event at the National Aquatic Centre, Bukit Jalil.
The 19-year-old also broke a national record by a marginal 0.01s in the 50m freestyle at the 2021 Hanoi SEA Games held in May.
The Sukma debutant had contributed his fourth medal today after the 50m breaststroke and 4x100m freestyle relay yesterday, as well as the men’s 50m butterfly the day before.
The London’s King’s College neuroscience student will compete in two more events tomorrow – 50m freestyle and 4x100m medley – in which he aimed to make a clean sweep.
“This is one of the competitions I did the most events.
“I am not tired, in fact, I am very happy to be able to contribute as many gold medals as possible for Kuala Lumpur,” he added.
Selangor’s Ng Tze Xiang (54.72s) and Melaka’s Low Zheng Yong (55.82s) came in second and third place. – The Vibes, September 22, 2022
