KUALA LUMPUR – The Royal Malaysian Police confiscated over RM3 million in connections with illegal gambling and betting syndicates operated during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
As part of their Ops Soga IX aimed to curb illegal gambling and betting, the police conducted a total of 129 raids in all states, and from that, made 152 arrests in relation to illegal bookies.
In a statement, the police said they had confiscated RM3,177,293.17 in credit value from the betting software, RM113,140 in cash, HK$356,940 (RM206,006), SGD500 (RM1,643), three computers, five laptops, two tablets, 151 mobile phones, two routers, 54 sim cards, 16 papers with suspected World Cup bets, and 14 sheets of World Cup schedules.
According to law enforcement, most raids were carried out in Selangor (36), followed by Johor (29), and Kedah (12).
From that, there were 38 arrests in Selangor, 29 in Johor, and 12 in Kedah.
Authorities said those that were arrested during the raids will be investigated under the Betting Act of 1963 and the Common Gaming Houses Act of 1953.
“The police will take stern action on those who organise and carry out gambling in accordance with the laws that are set in place to combat gambling.
