KUALA LUMPUR – A national cycling coach has denied an allegation of sexual harassment against him, which was filed by his athlete, recently.

National mountain bike (MTB) team manager Mohd Saiful Abdul Jalil said this yesterday when asked if he has been communicating with the MTB coach.

“I spoke to him, and he denied it (the sexual harassment allegation). But I cannot divulge more of what was said between us because we do not wish to interrupt the police investigation.

“I also cannot comment on what type of sexual gesture was committed,” he said.

Saiful added he has been in constant communication with the alleged victim and the alleged perpetrator daily to try to understand their situation.

In the meantime, Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) vice-president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill stressed that the association wishes to be impartial in the case and both parties deserve fair treatment as the case is still under ongoing police investigation.

He explained that it is important to hear the stories from both sides as well as the relevant parties involved before making any decision.

“The Misconduct and Protection in Sport Committee has activated the Safe Sport Code to conduct their investigation,” said Amarjit.

“If he (the coach) is found guilty, his license could be revoked, and he cannot take part in any cycling activities.

“But let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. I cannot divulge more details as this is an ongoing police investigation.

“We want to remain impartial and will see how things progress.”

Amarjit added that for now, full support will be provided to the alleged victim to help her prepare for the upcoming 2024 SEA Games in Cambodia in May.

As for the coach, he has been taken off duty temporarily to make way for the investigation. – The Vibes, April 5, 2023
