TWO of the six Bersatu Members of Parliament who declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim have dismissed allegations that party deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin orchestrated their move, describing the claims as baseless.
Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang) and Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) rejected the assertion made by Bersatu co-founder Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, calling it “a lie.”
Syed Abu Hussin went further, claiming instead that Hamzah had long harboured ambitions to unseat Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Bersatu president but avoided an open confrontation.
“Hamzah wanted to remove Muhyiddin, but he did not want to challenge him directly,” Sinar Harin cited him saying. “I once asked him about Muhyiddin, and he said Muhyiddin had issues with the Palace and Sarawak. So I told him, let me speak to Muhyiddin and ask him to resign as president.
“But Hamzah told me not to. That’s his game — he wanted to topple Muhyiddin but without fighting openly. He just wanted to create pressure so that Muhyiddin would step down. But in the end, Muhyiddin did not resign,” Syed Abu Hussin added.
Meanwhile, Suhaili denied that Hamzah, who also serves as Opposition Leader in Parliament, had any involvement or knowledge of the decision made by the six MPs to switch allegiance to the Unity Government.
“Pak Wan’s (Mohd Redzuan’s) statement is untrue and a lie. Datuk Seri Hamzah was never involved in our decision to support Anwar,” Suhaili said.
The denials come amid deepening divisions within Bersatu, which has been grappling with internal power struggles between the camps aligned with Muhyiddin and Hamzah. The defection of six MPs to Anwar’s government has further strained the party’s cohesion and fuelled speculation about shifting loyalties ahead of the next general election. - November 6, 2025
