BONDI Beach has reopened to the public after a temporary closure prompted by a tragic shooting last Sunday that claimed 15 lives, authorities have confirmed.

The iconic beachfront area had been under heavy police control while investigators examined the scene and ensured public safety. Local officers have now removed barriers, allowing visitors to return to the beach and nearby parklands.

Reuters cite today that some members of the public visited the site to pay tribute to the victims, while damaged Jewish religious lamps from the Hanukkah celebration held during the attack remained visible in the surrounding park.

JJ Hecht, a visitor, said the local community had been deeply affected by the tragedy but refused to be cowed by fear. “It is incredibly painful and heart-breaking, but we will not be broken. We are stronger and more united,” he said.

Another local, Jeff, emphasised the personal significance of Bondi Beach. “I grew up in Bondi. My children and grandchildren have also served as lifesavers here. This place is part of my life,” he said.

The shooting occurred on 14 December, during a Hanukkah gathering attended by hundreds. Police have arrested 24-year-old Naveed Akram, who faces 59 charges, including murder and terrorism-related offences.
