THE Democrat Party of Thailand has formally launched its new campaign, #ThailandWon’tTolerate, signalling a renewed political push to address the nation’s longstanding challenges in governance, education, and economic management.
Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will spearhead the campaign and unveil the party’s full suite of policies on December 22.
Speaking ahead of the campaign launch, party spokesperson Pongsakorn Kwanmuang highlighted the urgency of confronting issues that have long troubled the country, including endemic corruption, underperforming education systems, and other persistent grievances that citizens have been forced to endure.
“The time to tolerate these problems is over,” The Nation cited him saying today, stressing that the party seeks to deliver meaningful solutions and restore public confidence in politics.
The Democrat Party has also engaged in public consultation, listening to citizens’ concerns and using this feedback to shape forthcoming policies. A national poll scheduled for December 20 will further gauge public opinion on the issues most urgently requiring action.
On December 22, Abhisit is set to formally present the party’s plans, emphasising principles of honest governance, transparency, and professional management.
Regarding the economy, Pongsakorn expressed confidence in Abhisit’s expertise as an economist to steer comprehensive economic reforms, with vice-leaders within the party responsible for overseeing specific economic sectors to ensure balance and effectiveness.
Addressing the question of potential Prime Ministerial candidates, Pongsakorn confirmed that the party intends to select from within its ranks, favouring experienced professionals with knowledge spanning economics, technology, and political affairs.
While speculation has surrounded the potential candidacy of party member Karndee Leopairote, Pongsakorn noted she is highly capable, but that the executive committee will make the final decision on PM candidates.
Drawing comparisons with other political parties, Pongsakorn remarked that while some groups, such as Bhumjaithai, have yet to finalise their candidates, the Democrat Party is focused on identifying leaders genuinely equipped to serve the nation’s best interests.
