A WOMAN was killed after being attacked by a tiger while sleeping in her hut in a village on the fringes of Kanha National Park in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The attack occurred at about 1.30am on Sunday in Parrapur Baigatola village within the Khapa area of the national park.

Forestry officials identified the victim as Sugni Bai Dhurve.

Residents rushed to the scene carrying flaming torches after hearing screams from the victim's family.

According to villagers, the tiger dragged the woman for about 300 metres before abandoning her and retreating into the forest after being startled by the approaching crowd.

Assistant Director of the Sijhora Buffer Zone, Ashish Pandey, said villagers reported that the victim had been asleep in her hut when the tiger entered the settlement at about 1.30am.

He said the animal attacked the woman by seizing her head before dragging her from the hut.

The victim, who suffered severe head injuries, was taken to Baihar Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Police have taken custody of the body and registered the case as a sudden death pending further investigation.

Forestry officials said a detailed report into the incident had been requested and confirmed that the victim's family would receive financial assistance in accordance with government compensation provisions. - August 3, 2026
