TOKYO – Authorities in the central Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka have ordered the evacuation of more than 28,500 residents due to the threat of floods and landslides amid heavy rainfall, reported the Sputnik news agency, quoting the NHK broadcaster today.

Some 7,900 people are to be evacuated from Minamiizu town, and around 20,700 from Shimoda city.

Both located on the Izu Peninsula.

The prefectures of Shizuoka, Wakayama and Kagoshima are experiencing downpours, which are expected to intensify throughout the day. – Bernama, July 1, 2021
