KUALA LUMPUR – Facebook is planning a revamp that will include a new name based around its impending “metaverse” design, a virtual reality version of the internet, according to The Verge.
Citing a source, the technology blog reported that the name change will be announced next week.
It said the social media giant’s CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg plans to announce the name change at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28, or sooner.
However, Facebook has not confirmed the matter, saying it does not comment on “rumour or speculation”, reported Reuters.
On Monday, Facebook had announced plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union to build the “metaverse”, a virtual reality version of the internet that the tech giant sees as the future.
The technology might, for example, allow someone to don virtual reality glasses that make it feel as if they're face-to-face with a friend – when in fact they are thousands of miles apart and connected via the internet, AFP reported. – The Vibes, October 20, 2021
