KUALA LUMPUR – Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) recorded a 15% increase in internet use since the movement control order (MCO) started on January 13 from the first time the lockdown was imposed last March.
In an email to Bernama, it said the MCO this time around sees Malaysians relying heavily on the internet to stay connected, work, and learn from home.
“We have the capacity and diverse network connectivity nationwide, and worldwide, to support an immediate and large spike in demand for internet bandwidth, as a result of our continuous network optimisation efforts.
“Our existing partnerships with the world’s technology giants and social networks in hosting online content in Malaysia have also resulted in better customer experience.”
It said the industry has come together to support the National Economic Recovery Plan by offering a special mobile data package for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) candidates.
“This package has been extended to students of institutions of higher learning under 22 years old, under the Malaysian Economic and Rakyat’s Protection assistance package.
“The special package offers a 15GB LTE data pass at the price of RM20, and is available until April 30, 2021.
“Also, all telcos have extended the offer of a free additional 1GB data daily, valid for 24 hours, for the same period.”
TM said the industry is collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to provide free broadband at selected People’s Housing Project (PPR) sites for SPM and STPM candidates.
“There are 130 PPRs involved in this project nationwide, and of them, 59 will be managed by TM.” – Bernama, January 30, 2021
