KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s construction sector grew 42.6% in the second quarter (Q2) of 2021 year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM28.2 billion, the highest growth recorded since the Q2 of 2012 due to the lower base last year.
The Statistics Department said the special trades activities subsector registered a growth of 75% in Q2 compared with that of the same quarter last year.
Meanwhile, the other three subsectors – civil engineering, non-residential buildings and residential buildings – showed a growth of 59.5%, 37%, and 18%, respectively, compared with the same quarter of 2020.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the value of construction work done was dominated by the civil engineering sub-sector since Q4 of 2015 with a 40.7% share.
This was followed by non-residential buildings (28.2%), residential buildings (22.6%) and special trades activities (8.6%).
He said the private sector continued to impel the construction activity with a 53.7% share of RM15.2 billion of the total value of construction work done compared with the public sector with a 46.3% share (RM13.1 billion).
For the first half of 2021, the value of construction work done amounted to RM59.6 billion, an 8.7% growth compared with the same period last year. – Bernama, August 9, 2021
