KUALA LUMPUR – The UMW Group’s automotive sales jumped 64% to 36,358 units in October 2021 compared with 22,193 units sold in September as both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and associate company Perodua continued with their sales recovery amid easing restrictions.

“The group expects the automotive sales recovery to be sustained through November and December, supported by the introduction of new models and year-end promotions.

“We are thankful to the government for the extension of the sales tax exemption as announced in the recent Budget 2022, which we believe will continue to hasten the recovery of the local automotive industry,” UMW Holdings Bhd president and group chief executive officer, Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said in a statement.

Last month, UMWT registered sales of 8,500 units or 5.8% higher than the 8,033 units sold in September with Toyota Vios continuing to be the marque’s bestselling model for October, followed by the Hilux and Yaris models.

Year-to-October 2021, UMWT sold 54,618 units, 24.7% more than the 43,807 units registered in the corresponding period last year, the company said in a statement.

In October, Perodua registered record-breaking monthly sales of 27,858 units, an impressive recovery from the 14,160 units registered in September 2021.

Perodua Myvi was its bestseller for the month, followed by the Axia and Bezza.

In terms of production, October also saw the highest number of vehicles it ever produced within a month at 29,803 units.

For the ten-month period, Perodua delivered a total of 146,951 units, 14.5% lower than the 171,861 units registered in the corresponding period of 2020, mainly due to the movement control orders and partly due to the semiconductor chip shortage. – Bernama, November 12, 2021
