KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) is deepening its focus to expand the halal market footprint, especially in countries within the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTTP) as well as the Middle East and North Africa region.

Matrade chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz said foreign countries such as South Africa, Taiwan and Japan are showing interest to expand business in the country and vice versa to Malaysian exporters.

“Our new market is the emerging market and for that Matrade has planned various programmes and activities to ensure that we are progressive and effective,” he told reporters at the press conference after the 18th Malaysia International Halal Showcase launch here today.

Mohd Mustafa said markets have already embarked aggressively on the digitalisation agenda and at the same time, Matrade is facilitating micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to understand and learn how to be exporters.

“While Matrade is looking for new markets, (at the same time) we must prepare our players to venture into export markets so that we can go to all the emerging markets that we had identified for them,” he said.

Matrade’s constant use of new innovative methods, such as virtual business matchings as well as the International Sourcing Programme, has all played its part to spur the increasing number of Malaysian MSMEs exploring the global halal market.

Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob launched the Matrade Digital Learning (MDL) – a virtual learning platform to improve Malaysian companies’ knowledge and skills by providing them with holistic content on export-related topics.

The content for MDL was developed partly through a collaboration with Google Malaysia and contains 13 industry-relevant modules. – Bernama, September 8, 2022
