KOTA  KINABALU – Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd will be spending some RM19.4 million to upgrade Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Tawau Airport.

According to state tourism minister Datuk Christina Liew, Malaysia Airports has allocated RM8.4 million to upgrade KKIA, and RM11 million for Tawau Airport.

Liew said this after she was briefed by Malaysia Airports senior officers led by senior general manager Kamaruzzaman Razali on the KKIA Optimisation Plan here today.

“Some RM1.4 million would be spent on improving the toilets at the KKIA airport while the remaining sum will be utilised for other upgrading projects.

“These include resurfacing of the runway, and upgrading of the commercial lots as well as the public address (PA) system,” she said in a statement.

For Tawau Airport, she said the plan entails providing additional toilets, upgrading the check-in area with a proper segregation between international and domestic segments, enlarging the departure lounge, adding more shoplots, and installation of air-conditioning units.

Liew said work is expected to start this year.

Kamaruzzaman meanwhile said KKIA is the second busiest airport in Malaysia in terms of passenger handling.

“It was designed for a capacity of 9 million passengers per annum. As of June this year (preliminary year to date), the airport had handled 3,299,076 passengers with 28,642 aircraft movements,” he said. – The Vibes, July 7, 2023
