TOM Holland, who shot to fame as the latest star to play the iconic role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, returned to Instagram after a hiatus to announce he was going to take leave of all social media.
In a video released on his official Instagram account on Sunday, the 26 year old actor, talked about his ongoing struggles with mental health, citing the negative effects of social media on his psyche.
“I’ve taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming,” he said.
“I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately, it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”
He used his brief return to social media to highlight UK charity organisation stem4, a program that helps youth manage their mental health.
“There is an awful stigma against mental health and I know that asking for help and seeking help isn’t something that we should be ashamed of but it is something that is much easier said than done,” Holland added.
He said using the four free apps from the program had helped to reduce his anxiety.
Holland also brought up his own charity support organisation The Brothers Trust, which supports Stem 4.
As he ended the video, the actor said he would “disappear from Instagram again”, before adding, “Thanks for your love and support. I love you all and I’ll speak to you soon.”
Holland recently starred in the record breaking Spider-Man: No Way Home, his sixth time donning the red and blue tights. In February, he played the title role in Uncharted, an adaptation of an acclaimed video game series. – The Vibes, August 15, 2022
