WHAT started as a social activity among a few senior citizens in Penang has now blossomed into a full-fledged event for the aged to showcase their skills as catwalk models and dancers, despite the old age myth of brittle joints and bones.
They not only performed as models, but they also managed to raise funds for the needy.
The brainchild of senior citizen rights advocate Baby Goh, said the event is called "Glamparents" where senior citizens, mostly women, are coached on modelling skills and in turn they turn up at catwalks to showcase their skills.
And the finale of Glamparents' showtime this year concluded on a high note at the W World in George Town, where their event raised RM71,332.77 of charitable funds.
The guest of honour, State Executive Councillor in charge of welfare, Lim Siew Khim, presented on behalf of the organisers cheques to two welfare organisations.
D’Home Mental Health Association received RM42,799.66, while Rose Charities received RM28,533.11.
Jointly organised by D’Home Mental Health Association and Glammas, an initiative dedicated to advocating active ageing and beautiful living for seniors aged 60 and above through fashion, dance, wellness and charitable activities, Glamparents Showtime 2026 was more than just a fundraising event.
It celebrated confidence, purpose and the belief that age should never be a limitation to personal growth and self-expression, said Goh.
The event featured a vibrant showcase of fashion, dance and intergenerational performances.
Among those present were DAP veteran Datuk Seri Chong Eng and Tan Lean Kee, the wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Lim singled out the state's appreciation of an innovative event because Penang is now an ageing state where more than 10% of the population is aged 60 and above.
Among the main contributors was renowned Penang artist Koh Teng Huat, whose contribution helped generate additional support for the beneficiaries. - June 6, 2026.
