SEREMBAN – The National Parks and Wildlife Department (Perhilitan) of Negri Sembilan has captured a 40-kg sun bear after it entered their trap, yesterday.

State Perhilitan director Wan Mat Wan Harun said the trap had been set up in Kampung Jimah Lama since June 18, following complaints from villagers that a sun bear was seen around there on June 12.

“Seven personnel were sent to the scene to inspect the trap as soon we received information that it had entered the trap at 7.15pm.

“The bear could have strayed into the village in light of the durian season. The smell of durians from the village could have lured the bear to leave its normal habitat,” he told Bernama, adding that the bear was in a healthy condition.

He said the department’s veterinary officer examined the bear before it was released into a wildlife protection forest reserve area in the state to ensure it was looked after.

He explained that although sun bears would not be aggressive if unprovoked, they were still dangerous as they have sharp teeth and claws. They are bears after all. – Bernama, June 30, 2021
