KUALA LUMPUR – Social media platform TikTok is stepping up its education vertical by connecting youths. It is working with TikTok guru creators who actively utilise the platform to develop supplemental learning materials for school subjects.
Although students are now returning to physical classrooms, various online tools are still being used to cater to different requirements. Bite-sized content platforms such as TikTok videos can assist with the understanding of a topic.
Post-pandemic, the platform has stepped up as an alternative platform for creative remote learning for students and a supplementary teaching tool for educators. Accounting for 14.3 billion views, #TikTokGuru is one of the most used Malaysian hashtags to date. Here are four subjects that children can learn on TikTok to supplement their school curriculum:
1. Language
Being a melting pot of cultures, Malaysia is known as a multilingual country where citizens can speak at least two languages. In schools, there is an emphasis on students mastering both Bahasa Malaysia and English. That is why many students turn to TikTok Gurus such as @SheikhRaffie and @sir_asai to enhance their vocabulary and improve their dictions in both languages.

It is in a child's nature to have active imaginations and use their curiosity to explore their feelings and the world around them. Science offers students the opportunity to increase their overall understanding of how and why things work. With Malaysians spending an average of three hours a day on social media[1], platforms like TikTok can make even a seemingly dry school syllabus can be made entertaining and easily understood.
