EDUCATION Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry was committed to strengthening vernacular schools in the country and stressed that there were no plans to abolish them.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to a school in Puchong during the new school session today, she said such schools were recognised under the Education Act and the ministry will continue recognising them.
“We are aware of the numerous views on vernacular schools, but we stand firm on the issue,” she said.
Last Saturday, Umno Youth called for a reassessment of the vernacular education system amid growing concerns over the polarisation and lack of cohesion among the country’s multiethnic population.
Its chief Muhamad Akmal Salleh said it was Umno Youth’s view that racial tensions stemmed from segregation involving schools and it was time for Malaysia to put an end to this.
On another note, Fadhlina also said the MoE was looking to strengthen the use of Bahasa Malaysia in national-type schools (SJKC).
“The national language remains a priority, while we are also committed to strengthening the grasp of the English language,” she said.
Fadhlina also assured that school canteens would remain open during the fasting month.
