UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh has hinted that it may be time for him to step aside, after having done his best to voice the concerns of the grassroots.

In a Facebook post today, the outspoken politician said he had done his best and conveyed the party's grassroots message as clearly as he could.

"Perhaps the shortcomings lie within myself, and the time has come for me to step aside.

"Thank you for all your voices that care deeply about this struggle. I believe that if our intentions are sincere for the sake of religion, race and the nation. God willing, the time will come," he said.

Yesterday, Dr Akmal expressed his appreciation to UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his willingness to examine the current political cooperation following several proposals raised at the Special Youth Convention recently.

The Merlimau State Assemblyman (ADUN) said that the party can start by examining the appropriate form of cooperation for the unification of the Malays, and described this as the right time to begin the effort.

“Thank you, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, for agreeing to several proposals from the Special Youth Convention recently.

“First, cooperation to unify the Malays begins with the two largest Malay parties, namely UMNO and PAS. Second, to reject any proposal to engineer a so-called ‘tebuk atap’ (backdoor) government,” the Umno Youth chief said. – January 7, 2026
