DETAILS of the proposed 11km-long Tanjung Bungah-Teluk Bahang paired road project will be made public soon, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Despite concerns expressed by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) about possible hill cutting for the paired road, Chow said details were being ironed out by the project delivery partner – Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd.

There is also speculation by NGOs that due to the hilly terrain and limited land bank, the project may involve another round of land reclamation to ensure the affluent Tanjung Bungah locality can be connected to the tourism belt of Teluk Bahang via another passage other than the present sole trunk road.

“The paired road alignment, its physicality and (construction) cost are being worked out. Upon completion, it will reduce vehicle travel time between the two areas.”

Chow said state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari would get more information about the paired road project before submitting it for approval at the state executive councillor meeting.

Earlier, Chow attended the consortium’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the Top in Komtar.

Among those present were the company’s managing director Tan Sri Khor Eng Chuen and its executive vice-president Datuk Amishah Siraj.

Amishah said the proposed package by the state will reduce the travelling time between the two locations by more than half.

Driving takes about 20 minutes on the 10.9km existing stretch from Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang.

However, the journey will take just nine minutes on the paired road, he said. – The Vibes, April 30, 2024.
