I grew up with Star Wars

by Pariselvam Parisithu

AS a child, I was transported to a galaxy far, far way by the visions of a planet with two suns, laser sword-wielding monks as protectors of the peace, and geometrically perfect TIE fighter jets battling in space.

As far as I can remember, what most enthralled me was the Lightsaber. I waited years Disney to build an actual working model.

The movie opening with a crawling prologue still gives me the chills.

I watched Star Wars reruns on TV in my 20s. I watch the prequels in the IMAX Cinema.

The Force and the journey of Luke Skywalker, from when he became a Jedi to when he faced his father, Darth Vader, inspired me.

Every Jedi has a master Padawan. It was bittersweet to watch Master Obi-Wan’s greatest apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, join the dark side.

Anakin as Darth Vader is the greatest Jedi of all time.

The brilliant storytelling continues in “A New Hope”. The 2D animated Clone Wars shorts eventually evolved into a 3D animated Clone Wars series.

It was great to see Ezra, Sabine, and Hera in the “Ashoka” TV series.

The “Star Wars Rebels” 3D animated series reminds me of the first rebels of Luke, Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca, whose friends were R2D2 and C3PO.

Today, my favourite Star Wars series, the space spaghetti Western “The Mandalorian” with the ultimate bounty hunter Din Djarin and lovable foundling Grogu continues to keep me in awe of the Star Wars universe.

MAY the 4th be with you, young Padawan and Jedi everywhere. – May 4, 2024.
