THE police force should ensure that it respects justice and protects the rights of disabled persons, former de facto law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has said.
He said that the deaf Grab driver being assaulted has turned into a matter of not just criminal assault but also of serious police misconduct.
“Why are the police taking sides? Are they not supposed to act on all reports without fear of anyone?” he posted on X today.
Zaid was referring to the deaf e-hailing driver who was assaulted by a security detail personnel last Monday.
Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said investigation into the alleged assault was still ongoing despite earlier reports that the case was “settled” after the victim allegedly accepted RM800 from a representative of the assailant.
Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has hit out at attempts to link the royal institution to the alleged assault of an e-hailing driver.
“I do not condone any illegal action or intimidation. I urge the authorities to investigate thoroughly the incident where a police officer escort is alleged to have committed a harmful act.
“I hope the authorities will take action in accordance with the law and give the victim justice,” he said on X.
On Wednesday, police said that the case involving Tunku Ismail’s bodyguard, who allegedly assaulted a disabled man at a hotel, has been amicably resolved.
However, the deaf driver said that he still wants justice and rejects any compensation, said his lawyers.
Zaid said that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail should quickly investigate the complaints of the Grab driver, where he was forced to accept RM800 to withdraw his complaint.
“The home minister has a grand design for the police force. It was announced that he would get parliamentary approval to make the Agong the honorary commissioner of police chief.
“It’s embarrassing for the king and country for the king to be the honorary head of a force that participated in bullying a driver with a disability.”
Zaid said that Malaysians do not want a country run by a police force that abuses its powers.
“We do not want that from any enforcement agency. There has been a plethora of abuse in the past.” – June 1, 2024.
