FLASH floods swept through Penan villages and a school in the deep interior of northern Sarawak, following torrential rains.
Two longhouses, Long Sait and Long Kerong, and SK Long Sait in the upper reaches of Baram district suffered damage from swift water and mud flows yesterday and early today.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said rescue teams from Marudi were deployed to help the 600 residents.
"The floods caused infrastructural damage to the homes and the school and also caused them to be covered in mud," it said in a statement.
"A suspension bridge was damaged. Fortunately, there were no injuries and there is still no need to evacuate the residents."
The Penans are among the smallest ethnic groups in Sarawak.
Since late last month, the weather in northern Sarawak has caused a spate of sudden floods.
On May 29, widespread floods were seen in the Baram and Mulu districts. – June 8, 2024.
