THE lawyer for the parents of murder victim Zayn Rayyan hopes to meet his clients before the remand period for the couple ends.

Fahmi Abd Moin said he will submit a second application to the police on Monday, after police failed to respond to the first application.

"For now, we have yet to be granted access to meet our clients. We also haven't obtained any feedback (from the police) regarding our first application to do so.

"As such, we will be sending a follow-up application tomorrow," Fahmi was quoted as saying in a report in the New Straits Times

The former deputy public prosecutor was appointed as Zayn Rayyan's parents' new counsel.

His appointment came about after the couple's former counsel, Mahmud Abdul Jumaat, said he would no longer be representing them as of last Tuesday.

The magistrates’ court last Friday extended the remand order against Zayn’s parents for six more days until June 12 on Friday.

The boy’s parents were initially remanded for seven days, beginning June 1 until today, to assist in the murder case being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Last year on December 6, the body of six-year-old Zayn Rayyan was found lying in a stream close to his home at Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai in Petaling Jaya, after being reported missing the day before.

The child is believed to have been murdered based on autopsy results which found self-defence wounds on his neck and body.

The couple were detained by police two weeks ago to assist in the six-year-old boy's

On Saturday, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said inconsistencies in the statements provided by the couple as well as other witnesses led police to obtain a remand extension against them.

He said the parents’ lawyers could meet their clients but it was at the police’s discretion.

“They can either meet the clients within the remand period or after.

“The police have the discretion to ascertain when (they can meet),” he said. – June 9, 2024.
