THE police will carry on providing services as usual even though police stations in the country have been instructed to close their gates after 10pm, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The country’s top cop said the public could lodge complaints and reports as usual, and that the instruction to all police stations would be implemented after the standard operating procedure regarding the matter had been presented to Bukit Aman Management Department Director Datuk Seri Azmi Kassim.

“As stressed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, we should balance the role of the police station as a place where the public lodges reports and at the same time, the stations are also targets of threats, so we balance both needs,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

He told the national news agency the implementation of the 10pm closure currently involved police stations in remote or rural areas.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told parliament that all police station gates around the country would be closed from 10pm as part of stronger security measures.

He told the house that this followed the Ulu Tiram police station incident in Johor in May where two policemen were killed.

“We have to balance the needs of the people and also the safety of our policemen,” he said during Minister’s Question Time.

He said police have also been instructed to reexamine and tighten their standard operating procedures at all stations, including frequency of patrols.

“In terms of the logistics situation at each police station, whether it’s lights, fences, and so on, we issued instructions to provide information immediately and it will go through a process for us to improve,” he said.

In the Ulu Tiram police station attack on May 17, Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, were killed.

Another police officer, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, 38, was injured by two gunshots to the shoulder and hip. – July 10, 2024.
