BARISAN Nasional will field a young candidate for the Nenggiri state by-election slated for August 17, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Speaking after officiating the Masjid Tanah Umno division meeting, he said the identified candidate will also have on-the-ground experience.
“We have chosen a young candidate with on-the-ground (experience). We cannot field someone just by plucking the person from the sky,” he said, as reported by the New Straits Times.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said their political bureau had identified one of three shortlisted candidates to contest in the by-election.
They would be submitting the name of the selected candidate to Kelantan Umno liaison chairman Datuk Ahmad Jazlan.
The nomination of candidates for the state by-election would be held on August 3, while early voting is set for August 13.
The election was called after the Kelantan assembly declared the seat vacant on June 19.
This followed the cessation of former assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim’s membership in Bersatu, relayed through an official notice to him on June 13. – July 14, 2024
