DEPUTY Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah is leading the Malaysian delegation to Doha, Qatar, to attend the burial ceremony of assassinated Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh today, said Wisma Putra.
In a statement, Wisma Putra said Shamsul Anuar will be accompanied by Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof and officials from the ministry.
“The deputy home minister and the Malaysian delegation will attend the special jenazah prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque in Doha after the Friday prayers.
“The body of Almarhum Ismail Haniyeh will be laid to rest at the Founder Imam cemetery in Lusail,” the statement read.
The statement said Malaysia stands in solidarity with the family members, leadership, and people of Palestine.
“The insufferable grief, unequivocal suffering and untold sacrifice of Palestinians are the epitome of the life of the martyred Ismail Haniyeh who had given his family, his life and his soul to the struggle for freedom, peace and justice towards realising a sovereign, independent Palestinian state,” the statement said
Haniyeh was killed in Iran on Wednesday.
He had attended Iran’s new president’s swearing-in ceremony the day before.
Haniyeh was the international face of Hamas and the most senior leader of the Palestinian resistance group to be assassinated by Israel since the 2004 attack that killed its spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in Gaza.
The 62-year-old Haniyeh was head of Hamas’s political bureau and had been living in Qatar since 2023. – August 2, 2024.
